VASCO
Even as senior leaders of Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Wednesday agreed ‘in-principle' to forge an alliance to keep the BJP at bay, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha remained unmoved and said the Congress did not need an alliance with other parties, adding that it only needed an alliance with the public and voters.
Sardinha was speaking to reporters after inaugurating the new office of Vasco Congress block in Mangor in the presence of GPCC President Girish Chodankar, Congress Block President Ularico Rodrigues and others.
"We don't care about other new parties and they are bound to take some votes. When some people leave, many more people join as well. As far as alliance is concerned, we have already informed the high command of our views and they will take a call.”
“We don't need alliances and we have seen what alliances have done in the past. I have been saying all along and I say it again, we don't need an alliance with political parties, but we need an alliance with people and voters," said Sardinha.
Vasco Block President Ularico Rodrigues appealed to people to get the Congress victorious in Vasco.
"We are open to everyone and we have no reservations about anyone joining us. We are in the process of finalising a candidate. We will discuss with the block and around 400 party active members, and then we will finalise the candidate. We may have a new face from Vasco on a Congress ticket," said Rodrigues.
Earlier on Wednesday, NCP Goa chief Jose Phillip D’Souza said the NCP and Congress leaders in New Delhi had an in-principle agreement to forge an alliance of like-minded parties in the coming elections to keep the BJP at bay and added that leaders of the two parties would meet again to decide on the number of seats the NCP would contest in the ensuing polls.
