Upset over acute water shortage in the village, angry locals from Satre in Nagargao-Sattari marched to the PWD water supply office in Valpoi on Thursday and threatened to stage an agitation outside the office if the issue was not solved within four days.
The PWD junior engineer Ganesh Gaonkar is reported to have assured them to resolve the problem within the next two days.
The locals claimed that Satre village is almost 18 kms away from Valpoi town and they had been facing water shortage since the last three months.
They complained that despite reporting the matter to the Valpoi PWD office, there had been no solution to their grievances.
After listening to the aggrieved locals, Gaonkar suggested that he would send water tankers to the affected areas, but the locals refused the water tanker service on grounds that the tankers would not be in a position to supply adequate water to all affected residents.
Gaonkar then said the water pipeline at Satre could be connected to the main Maloli pipeline which would resolve their water shortage problems.
Later speaking to reporters, the locals accused the PWD of supplying them with contaminated water form the river last year and attempts by the PWD to supply water from the same river would not be tolerated.
Sources said some machinery at the Nanoda Water Treatment Plant machinery had been damaged during the monsoon floods last year and is yet to be repaired.
When contacted, a PWD official said repair work is underway and would be completed within 10 days. The official said residents of Satre would then get proper water supply from the Nanoda Water Treatment Plant.
