Counting of votes for the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections is likely to be delayed by at least three hours on account of cross-verification with voter-verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) units.
The Supreme Court on Monday ordered that Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail slips of five electronic voting machines in every constituency should be counted instead of just one EVM in the upcoming elections.
“Though we have not received any official correspondence from the central election commission We are ready to abide by the SC orders.” Said additional Chief Executive officer Narayan Sawant.
“The counting of VVPAT slips will delay the results,” said Sawant.
In this case, initial trends may be delayed to 11 am. As of now, trends emerge by 9 am.
Following controversy on EVM tampering, the EC declared in May that all elections hereon would be conducted through VVPAT.
Using the VVPAT, a voter will be able to ensure his/her vote goes to the candidate of his/her choice. A paper slip is immediately printed with details of the vote.
The EC has to tally these slips with the results of EVMs in at least 5 polling voting machines in each constituency.
Meanwhile, around 29307 new voters from the age group of 18 to 19 years will vote in these elections, said additional CEO Narayan Sawant.
Total 11,35,811 voters will vote in the state. There are around 2,00783 voters in the age group of 20 to 29 years, 239053 voters (30-39 years), 251600 voters (40-49 years), 191546 (50 -59 years), 1,26,228 (60-69 years), 72,955 voters (70-79 years) and 24,339 voters of 80 plus age.
No restriction on late-night religious celebrations: Additional CEO Narayan Sawant made it clear that there will be no restrictions on late-night religious celebrations as these functions are not part of an election campaign.
Deputy Chief Minister and GFP chief Vijai Sardesai had requested the Election Commission to exempt traditional religious activities from the scope of a sound ban deadline during the Lent season.
Lent is a season of grief that necessarily ends with a great celebration of Easter, which falls on April 21 this year.
