SC takes cognisance of Goa plea, issues notice to K’taka

PANAJI
Taking cognisance of the plea filed by the Goa government, the Supreme Court of India has issued notice to Karnataka challenging the permissions granted by the Central Water Commission to Karnataka for the Kalasa-Bandura river diversion project.

The notice was issued in an earlier case filed by the Goa government that pointed to the project is being constructed in the close vicinity of Goa’s Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and within the ecologically sensitive zone of the sanctuary as well as that of the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka.

The Goa government has also filed an interim application before the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the Central Water Commission (CWC)’s approval granted to Karnataka for diversion of the water of the River Mhadei. The state is also seeking a stay on any construction that may be intended to be carried out by the Karnataka government.

The application for stay will be heard on February 13.
