The Shadow Council for Margao has said it is rather shocking to learn that the government is spending Rs 30 lakh per month on the collection of waste dumped along road sides.
“Apart from the government/Goa Waste Management Corporation, every local body across Goa, are also spending huge amounts on the waste collection from the so called “black spots”, SCM Convener Savio Coutinho stated.
And though the people in control repeatedly seek for suggestions from the public to handle the situation, the suggestions given are dumped in the waste bin, he lamented.
Coutinho informed, that on several occasions they have suggested to the Margao Municipal Council as well as the DMA, that instead of spending on workers to collect the strewn waste, the local bodies should designate fixed locations within the town or village Panchayat, and notify the public that no body should stealthily dump waste, but instead should deposit their waste at the notified locations, in a segregated form.
“Half of the number of workers would be required to man these locations and accept waste in segregated form, as compared to the workers engaged on collection of the strewn waste. So also the segregated waste provided, will facilitate its disposal scientifically aswell, he said further, and we will not witness burning of waste as a short cut method of disposal, Coutinho said.
With this system, the general public would prefer to hand over their waste officially, instead of dumping stealthily, with a risk of getting caught, Coutinho said.
“The actual fact, and reason for not adopting such a system is that certain agencies are appointed for clearing the strewn waste. And these agency’s for obvious reasons, have developed a “fevicol ka jod, tutega nahi”, the SCM Convener said sarcastically.
He added: “Foolish reasons are brought forth against the adoption of this system, that outside waste will be brought into the city’s. However, if designated collection spots are notified in Village Panchayat areas, why would people from the Villages come with their waste into the city.”
