CANACONA
Demanding immediate payment of the seafarer pension scheme, the Goa Forward Party (GFP) General Secretary Prashant Naik said the scheme formulated by the NRI Commission should be made permanent and not limited to only six months, as stated in the policy document.
Naik was speaking at a function organised by the Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) to distribute Covid kits at the Canacona Municipal hall.
“The seafarers have contributed to Goan economy in a big way and hence, the government is duty bound to to compensate them on retirement,” said Naik.
Canacona Municipal Council Chairperson Simon Rebello called upon the seafarers to unite under the banner of GSAI and put forth their demands before the government.
“Authorities will be compelled to act on the demands if the seafarers are united in their fight,” he said. On the occasion, about 200 seafarers were given Covid kits and those present on the occasion included GSAI President Frank Viegas.
