The Material Recovery Facility (MRF) shed at Honda in Sattari taluka was destroyed in a fire on Sunday, burning all the waste stored inside.

This is the second such incident in the taluka in less than 10 days. Earlier, on January 4, the MRF shed at Khotoda was also gutted in a fire.

When the fire at the MRF shed was first noticed, locals tried to put it out but were unable to control the spreading flames. The Valpoi fire station was then informed.

A fire brigade arrived at the scene and managed to extinguish the fire, but by that time, the MRF shed had already been destroyed.

Sources claim that several panchayats in Sattari taluka are unhappy with the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC), stating they have not received proper support or cooperation from the corporation.

On January 4, a similar fire had destroyed the waste and MRF shed at Khotoda in Sattari.

After that incident, Khotoda Sarpanch Prashita Gaonkar mentioned that the panchayat had repeatedly requested the GWMC to collect garbage over the past six months.

“However, the garbage was not collected from the panchayat’s MRF shed, leaving it full of waste,” said Gaonkar.

With two MRF sheds in Sattari destroyed by fire, other panchayats in the taluka are growing concerned. Panch members are now questioning how they will manage their waste if the GWMC does not collect garbage from MRF sheds in the various panchayats.
