Lapses in security at the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) building have been exposed, after a printer from the Mamlatdar’s office was stolen on Saturday night.
According to sources, the printer was being used by the talathi in the Mamlatdar’s office to print various documents.
“The MMC building, which is a Portuguese-era building, has no security and many government offices like Excise Department, BSNL, Mamlatdar, Dy Collector, Treasury, Civil Supplies, Health Centre, Post Office, etc are housed in the basement of the MMC building."The Mamlatdar’s office is a very important office and it has visitors on a daily basis. We are shocked that some unknown person entered our office in the basement of the MMC building right in the heart of the city and stole the printer. This person is believed to have entered the premises after office hours and possibly thorough the backdoor," said the source.
"Fortunately, the burglar fled with the printer and it would have been a major loss if the person had taken away computers or our files or there was an untoward incident.”
“What if some miscreants set the office on fire and all our important documents, data and records are lost? It is vital that MMC deploys a watchman, especially at night, to prevent such incidents. Some suspect some staff may have taken the printer for some work and may return it by Monday evening. We will file a police complaint on Tuesday in case the printer is not located by Monday evening," said the source.
