An unorthodox method of celebrating the International Yoga Day was adopted by the DMD Youth Adventure Club (DMD YAC) and the Xaxti Riders Cycling Club on Thursday embarked on a exercise that would send a message of staying healthy and contributing to preserving and caring about the environment. Members from both groups cycled from Benaulim to Ravindra Bhavan, Margao while seed bombing along the way.
The founder and president of DMD Youth Adventure Club, Suprajit Raikar, who initiated the seed bombarding project in 2016, plans to plant 10,000 seed bombs in Goa this year. “We planted 500 seed bombs in the first year and 5000 in the second year in 2017 with the help of various NGOs and social organisations in Goa. This year we have raised our bar to 10,000 seed bombs,” Raikar stated .
Xaxti Riders Cycling Club plans to drop 2000 seed bombs of both fruit-bearing and non-fruit-bearing trees in the next 3 months, until September 2018. “We prefer trees having rapid growth like Banyan, Peepal and rain trees, which also offer oxygen and shade to be planted at the roadsides. Also fruit-bearing trees like jamun, mangoes, jackfruit and kokum will be planted through seed bombs when we go cycling in the remote hinterlands or forests on Sundays. This will make the forests self-sustainable with fruit bearing trees and allow the forest animals to feed themselves,” says Samir Nadkarni, founder and president of Xaxti Riders Cycling Club.
