Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday acknowledged the burgeoning issue of unemployment in the state, but also added that generating opportunities for self-employment was the only way ahead for the youth of the state.
"I know there is a lot of unemployment in Goa. I am of the belief that even if people do not get 100 per cent government employment, they should be in a position to be self-employed. I believe in this," Sawant told a function in Keri village in Mandrem assembly constituency.
Sawant's tour to Mandrem is a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party's political outreach efforts ahead of the 2022 state assembly polls.
Sawant also asserted that no injustice would be meted to the youth of the BJP-ruled constituency as far as their eligibility for government jobs was concerned. He also said that out of the 10,000 government vacancies created by the government recently, 5,500 had already been advertised.
"We have created 10,000 plus jobs and out of that, we have advertised 5,500. The eligible candidates will get the jobs. There will be no injustice in the Mandrem assembly constituency. Whether police or clerks, our efforts will be to give the jobs to eligible candidates," Sawant said.
While the timing of the creation of vacancies coincides with the beating of the election drums in the state, the Opposition has accused the government of repeatedly faltering on its promise to deliver jobs. The Opposition has accused successive governments of failing to keep their promises of creating government jobs to tide over the unemployment crisis in the state.
In April this year, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, a Mumbai-based think tank had pegged the monthly rate of unemployment in the state at 22.1 per cent.
