A 25-year-old hotel worker from Manipur is feared to have drowned after being swept away by a strong wave while allegedly attempting to take a selfie at Anjuna beach on Monday evening.
The incident occurred at around 5.30 pm when four staff members of a Panaji-based hotel had reportedly visited the beach for an outing.
According to police, the victim climbed down from the rocks to the edge of the sea to take a selfie when a huge wave suddenly struck him, causing him to lose his balance and fall into the rough waters.
He was unable to recover as the strong currents dragged him into the sea.
The incident triggered an immediate rescue operation, with lifeguards, the coastal police and personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services rushing to the spot to search for the missing man.
Despite an intensive search carried out by the different agencies till late Monday evening, the victim's body had not been recovered.
Police have registered the case, and PSI Saish Kinlekar is conducting further investigation into the incident.
