Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar and his wife Councillor Shraddha Amonkar on Thursday launched several self-sustaining courses through the Department of Handicrafts, Textile & Coir.
The first batch of around 100 women will get training from the department.
Speaking to reporters, Amonkar said the courses offered would ensure women empowerment and generate self-employment.
"These courses are being offered through the Department of Handicrafts, Textile & Coir and will begin from today. We have started with coir-making courses and the women will be trained to make coir mattresses, carpets, wall hangings and these products will be purchased by the Government through the department.”
“We will start the handloom saree-making course and training next week which will be a unique course. These courses and training will benefit a large number of women and make them self-dependent," said Amonkar.
Councillor Shraddha Amonkar said the coir would be provided by the department at Rs 1 per kilo instead of Rs 14 after the training.
"The department will purchase the coir mats at Rs 99 and if the participants want, they can sell in the open market without anyone’s permission, where the price can go up to Rs 299. The women in large number can form a group and get up to Rs 25 lakhs as subsidy to start their own production on large scale,” said Shraddha.
