Congress leaders from South Goa on Thursday took the platform on Congress Foundation Day to launch an attack on the BJP accusing it of forming the government sans any mandate and for bulldozing its way on the issue of nationalization of rivers, even as they questioned the government's decision to release water to Karnataka when many parts of Goa were facing drinking water shortage.

Congress leaders from South Goa on Thursday took the platform on Congress Foundation Day to launch an attack on the BJP accusing it of forming the government sans any mandate and for bulldozing its way on the issue of nationalization of rivers, even as they questioned the government's decision to release water to Karnataka when many parts of Goa were facing drinking water shortage.

C secretary Girish Chodankar publicly called upon party leaders to take on the ruling coalition and play the role as an effective opposition party.
Besides the GPCC chief and AICC Secretary and Leader of the Opposition, Babu Kavlekar, the meeting was attended by former Chief Minister Ravi Naik, Francisco Sardinha, Cuncolim MLA Clafacio Dias, newly elected district president Joe Dias, outgoing president Subhash Faldesai, senior party leader M K Sheikh and others.
Senior Congress workers including Baptist Pereira from Ponda, Damodar Borkar (Margao), Carminho Rodrigues (Velim), Antancio Carvalho and Mrs Magna Colacao from Cortalim , Agostinho Carvalho from Canaguinim, Quepem, were alos present.
In his address, Shantaram Naik accused the RSS for having set the narrative for the BJP-led government at the Centre, thus posing a great challenge for the people of the country. He said the Parrikar government is pushing for the nationalization of rivers to placate Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and cannot say no to transportation of coal so as not to antagonize corporates such as the Adanis.
In his address, Leader of the Opposition Babu Kavlekar said that the people ruling the country are out to sideline Mahatma Gandhi and giving importance to Sardar Vallabhai Patel without realizing that both were stalwarts of the Congress party.
Ponda MLA Ravi Naik said the Chief Minister of Goa has plans to release water from the Mhadei river to Karnataka for drinking purpose when many areas in the state are suffering from water shortage. That's not all. He said that the Water Resources Minister Vinoda Paliencar has added confusion by refusing to release even a drop of water, while demanding to know who calls the shots on the issue -- the CM or the WRD minister.
Former South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha called for unity among the party rank and file to take on the government, saying the government has been formed without the mandate of the people. He also attacked the government for not doing its homework on GST and demonetization.
Subhash Faldesai, Joe Dias and M K Sheikh also spoke on the occasion.
