Goods estimated at Rs 17 lakh were destroyed when a fire gutted some beachside huts at Calangute beach in the wee hours of Thursday.

According to reports, the Pilerne fire station received a call at around 4.20 am regarding a fire in seven huts at Calangute beach. A fire brigade was dispatched to the site and when firefighters realised that one fire tender would be insufficient to extinguish the fire, they sought the services of two more fire tenders, one each from Mapusa and Panaji.

It took the firefighters nearly seven hours to extinguish the fire. The property damaged in the fire included three wooden boats, a fibre boat, nets, beds, etc., all valued at around Rs 17 lakh.  The cause of the fire is unclear and officials at Pilerne fire station were conducting investigations. Fire officers Ajit Kamat and Pradeep Manjrekar supervised the firefighting operations.
