As counting day kept people glued to the results of the biggest democratic process in the world, many Goans were glued to their phone screens keeping a tab on social media for clues as to who might emerge victorious.
As the earliest seat was announced in Goa, i.e. the Panjim by-poll seat which went to the Congress, a Facebook user reacted to The Goan's announcement of the same saying, "victory for democracy in Panjim."
Through the day, users of social media were following updates very closely with many emojis and congratulatory messages being shared, as well as tons of likes on some exclusive photographs from our lensmen being shared on Facebook.
Towards the end of the day, it was the comment of South Goa MP-elect Francisco Sardinha that got him a lot of attention, and evoked some very sarcastic responses. After winning, Sardinha said that he would take up the issue of legalizing dhirios (bull fights) in Parliament.
Several Twitter users had shake my head moments when they saw the statement. Reacting to The Goan's Twitter handle, one user said, "This is the most 'Hold my beer' content from a Goan politician." Another user said, "Dhirios in parliament? Actually not a bad idea. Settling disputes via dhirios in parliament might actually make it more efficient."
"At least come with something better Sardinhabab," said one user, while another took off on the Congress tweeting, "Seriously @INCGoa, this is your party's priority? The working class people need a mining corporation, government jobs, med stock in JanAushadhi stores, a SOTTO centre for organ donation/transplant in GMC, Seventh Pay scales for @swachhbharat and mid-day meal workers."
Another user commented saying, “I applaud the South Goa electorate for giving their mandate to @INCIndia’s Francisco Sardinha. He has assured to take up legalizing ‘Dhirios’ (bull fights) in Parliament. This is his first promise. You people get what you deserve. Congratulations!”
