A health hazard is staring at the residents of Sirvodem after sewage water inundated a traditional pond in the locality since the last many days.
While the residents knocked the doors of the authorities to stop the nuisance and the health hazard, they only received a reply from a person manning the sewage treatment plant that the problem was due to a failure of a pump at the plant.
Citizens, however, have demanded that the PWD drain out the sewage water from the water body before the monsoon, fearing it will get mixed with rain water and flood the entire locality.
Rohit Naik said though the residents had given a complaint to the PWD for necessary action, the ground reality has not changed. “When we approached the sewage treatment plant at Sirvodem, we were told that a non-functional pump was the cause of the problem. The sewage has overflowed from the chamber and has found its way to the pond via a storm-water drain,” he said, while demanding that the authorities drain out the sewage water from the water body.
Another resident Xavier Fernandes echoed similar sentiments. He wondered why there’s no action by the PWD to drain out the sewage water from the water body when the local residents had complained of nuisance.
“A health hazard is staring at the residents, but the authorities seem to be running out of ideas on how to address the issue,” he said, while adding that the situation could only worsen in the rains.
