In another major finding, the inspection team observed continuous discharge of grey water and sewage into the Khareband storm water drain. Officials noted that the precise source of the sewage flow could not be identified because large sections of the drain are covered with concrete slabs, making inspection difficult.
The team also came across informal settlements in the area, marked by sub-standard housing conditions and a lack of adequate sanitation facilities. According to the inspection report, officials found toilets constructed by migrant residents directly along the banks of the River Sal.
The report described the situation as one of the most critical sources of river contamination and strongly recommended urgent intervention to prevent further pollution of the river ecosystem.
Officials further pointed out that the storm water drain at Khareband discharges into the River Sal within just 100 metres, intensifying concerns over the direct flow of untreated sewage into the water body.
The findings have once again brought attention to the growing environmental challenges facing the River Sal, with experts and residents repeatedly raising concerns over sewage discharge, encroachments, and inadequate urban sanitation infrastructure in the region.
