Sewer upgrade work begins at Sasmollem with modern tech

In a significant step towards improving civic infrastructure and sanitation facilities, work on upgrading the old sewer line at Sasmollem began on Monday.

The project, which will be carried out using the advanced pipe bursting method, marks a major milestone in the ongoing efforts to upgrade Vasco’s ageing drainage system.

The project involves replacing the old, damaged pipelines with larger-capacity lines by breaking the existing ones underground, eliminating the need for extensive digging.

Officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) said this technology would help reduce maintenance costs and improve the flow of sewage in the area.

Speaking after inaugurating work on the project, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar said the initiative was part of a larger vision to modernise Vasco’s underground utilities using sustainable engineering solutions.

“For too long, residents of Sasmollem and neighbouring areas have faced recurring drainage and sewage issues. By introducing the pipe bursting method, we are ensuring that the new sewer network will be more durable, efficient, and environmentally safe,” he said.

He added that such projects reflect a shift towards adopting modern technology for long-term public benefit.

“Our aim is not just to patch old systems but to completely transform Vasco’s infrastructure for the next generation. This method minimises disruption to daily life while ensuring that the new lines have a much longer lifespan,” Salkar stated.

A PWD engineer present at the site said the project will significantly reduce instances of overflow and clogging that have troubled residents for years.

“This project is a clear example of how innovation can directly improve public health and hygiene,” the engineer added.
