Sewerage line to new STPs to be connected after Chaturthi: officials

MARGAO
It will be two months on Monday since CM, Manohar Parrikar commissioned two state-of-the-art Sewage Treatment Plants at Margao, but the densely populated southern part of the commercial capital is still not been connected to the sewerage plants.
Both the JICA agency and Sewerage Corporation of Goa have maintained that the two plants - JICA's 6.75 MLD plant and the Corporation's 20 MLD plant - have met the laid down parameters during the trial runs. Sewage from the scores of the apartments and households, however, have still not flowed through the sewer lines till date.
When The Goan contacted JICA officials to shed light on the delay in connecting the sewer lines to the newly commissioned 6.75 MLD Sewage treatment plant, the official said that JICA is not involved in connecting the sewer lines to the plant. "JICA's role was only to put in place the 6.75 MLD at the Sirvodem sewage treatment complex. We have completed the job and the task of connecting the sewer lines to the STP rests with the PWD," remarked an official.
PWD officials, on the other hand, pointed out that all out efforts are underway to connect the underground sewerage line to the newly-commissioned STPs, while tentatively saying that the process of issuing connections will begin after Chathurti in September.
"The Corporation has already laid the underground sewerage network in Malbhat, parts of Pajifond, Aquem, Power House, besides the village of Rumdamol. Barring some missing links at Aquem near the Pandva Church, we are ready to issue household sewage connections," informed the PWD engineer.
Replying to a question, the engineer pointed that the dept had made provision for issuing household sewage connections, adding that the dept will start issuing the connections once the line is ready in all respects after Chathurti.
Margao's densely populated southern zone comprising of the Aquem-Pajifond-Malbhat is still not been connected to the STP since the ambitious project to cover the entire city with an underground sewerage line began 33 years ago.
That's not all. Though the PWD and sewerage corporation has now laid underground lines along Aquem-Pajifond-Malbhat area, the heart of the town comprising of the Gandhi market, Municipal building-old collectorate area, where work was undertaken by JICA, has also not been connected to the STP.
