An estimated 500 persons have been compelled to answer nature’s call in open spaces as the public toilet complex at Shapur-Bandora has been shut for over a month after the person maintaining the toilet has reportedly not been paid for the past few months.
People residing in the slums, especially migrants living in the vicinity, have demanded the immediate re-opening of the toilet facility as it is being used by more than 500 persons daily.
“We had been using the toilets built by the PWD for the locals but they have been shut and we have nowhere to go,” said a local woman Rukshar Bepari, while speaking to media persons.
The toilet complex, which consists of 24 toilets, had been constructed by then PWD minister Sudin Dhavalikar.
“People are now defecating in the open,” said former sarpanch Rajesh Naik, while appealing to authorities to clean the toilets and reopen them to the public.
