Students of Sharda Mandir School, Miramar, have now resorted to wearing jeans to school to keep dengue-carrying mosquitoes at bay. School authorities have given students leeway to break the ‘full uniform to school’ rule that state schools have in place, after the dengue outbreak in Miramar recently.
As the dengue scare was still in the air, concerned parents had approached school authorities a couple of days ago for permission so that students could wear jeans to school. Students have been allowed to wear jeans along with their uniform shirts till October 15.
Some parents had reportedly stopped sending their children to school after the dengue outbreak while others sent their kids equipped with mosquito repellents. However, parents who were still worried, approached school authorities around two days ago to request for permission for their children to wear jeans. School authorities immediately acquiesced, and those students who wished to do so, started wearing jeans from Monday.
Further, in order to arrive at a solution to the dengue issue, parents requested for a meeting with health officials. Parent representatives from all classes -- nursery to Class 10 -- along with school staff, will be meeting with health officials on September 26 in the school.
A parent who spoke to ‘The Goan’ said, “the problem is not within the school... the areas outside the school need to be taken care of”. Last week, a school official had also explained that the school faced a problem of stagnant water on two sides outside the campus.
It may be recalled that several students from the school were down with dengue during the Ganesh Chaturthi week. Parents then approached health authorities who discovered the mosquito breeding areas where construction work was going on at a nearby club. Health officials told ‘The Goan’ on Tuesday that no new cases of dengue from that area had been reported after the fumigation was done on Saturday.
