Thunder showers lash Goa

The showers which started shortly after 10 pm continued till late in the night and came as a welcome relief to the people as hot and humid weather conditions had prevailed over the State in the past few days. People said the lightning and thunder were akin to the condition during retreating monsoons.

Warmer days are here, but don't panic, it's only for a few days before temperatures start receding back to normal as in the initial days this month. Considerable rise in mercury in the last couple of days had taken Goans by surprise, blame it on the disturbance caused by the westerly winds. Thankfully, the development of warm trough, however, is likely to weaken in another two days.
Since the beginning of November, temperatures had dipped to as low as 20 degree Celsius in the State owing to the cool westerly winds originating from the Northern region of India. But with the development of a warmer trough over the South Konkan region and Sri Lanka, warmer winds have caused temperatures on land to increase.
Called the western disturbance, the warm trough is expected to weaken by Friday. According to forecasts by the Indian Meteorology Department in Goa, the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to return to normal.
Goa on Tuesday experienced a maximum temperature of 34.8 degree Celsius and a minimum of 24.4 degree Celsius. Forecast for the next two days puts the maximum temperature at 34 degree Celsius and minimum at 24 degree Celsius. In all, the state has experienced a departure of 2 degree Celsius from the normal temperatures registered.
Speaking to The Goan, Director in charge ML Sahu said, “For the last one week, minimum temperatures dropped to as low as 19 degree Celsius due to the Westerly winds but in the last three days there has been change in wind direction. A trough over the south Konkan region and Sri Lanka has developed, which once weakened, will bring a drop in temperature.”
Sahu also said that, this year the state had received normal levels of rainfall, registering 2957.6 mm. November being the month of post monsoon season, it registered a total of 88.2 mm compared to normal of 179.8 mm.
