Shigmo festivities kick off on March 24

The state will kick off Shigmo celebrations on Thursday, March 24, with the first parade to be held at Ponda setting in motion celebrations which will go upto April 4.

Announcing this, GTDC Chairman Nilesh Cabral said that the celebrations will see film actress Mrinal Dev-Kulkarni in attendance in Goa on March 31 besides a long list of programmes.
No parade will be held on March 25 (Good Friday). Shigmo parades in the other centers are as follows: Panaji (March 26),Margao (March 27), Bicholim (March 28), Vasco (March 29), Quepem (March 30), Curchorem (March 31), Sanguem (April 1), Cuncolim (April 2), Mapusa (April 3), Pernem (April 4), Sanquelim (April 5), Valpoi (April 6) and Canacona (April 7). 
Shigmo parades in the other sub-centres are as follows: Tivim (April 2), Shiroda (April 3) and Dharbandora (April 6), the tourism department has announced.
Main Shigmo celebrations will be entitled to `6 lakhs as organising money and `4 lakhs as prize  money while sub-centres will get `4 lakhs as money for organising the events while `2 lakhs for prize money. Shigmo is celebrated in Goa as spring’s biggest festival which honoured the homecoming of the warriors who had left their homes and families at the end of Dussehra to fight invaders. During Shigmo, traditional folk dances and depiction of mythological scenes through parades all across the state are the major highlights. People dress in colorful outfits, hold colourful flags and play musical instruments like the dhol tasha, flutes and go in a procession.

Govt considering stadium 
exclusively for parades

PANAJI: The Tourism department is toying with the idea of building a stadium for parades where Carnival and Shigmo could be depicted all the year round as a tourist attraction, Chairman of GTDC Nilesh Cabral has said.
Cabral said that the tourism department already has possession of nearly 28,000 square metres of land in Santa Cruz village which could be used for the purpose.
“The idea is to allow the best floats from the parades to be exhibited round the year to tourists. We want to build a mini stadium where these parades can be held,” Cabral said. 
He said that the idea was at a preliminary stage and will be implemented in the months to come.
