The grand Shigmotsav float parade, organised by Porvorim Shigmotsav Samiti in collaboration with the Directorate of Tourism, delighted several thousand people in Porvorim on Sunday.
The procession began after Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte placed a garland at the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj near the Education Department. Following the formal flag-off ceremony, the romtamel of Porvorim Shigmotsav Samiti started the event, followed by other romtamels and colourful floats depicting mythological scenes. The celebration was overseen by the Goa police.
Numerous troupes, across four categories - floats (27), romtamel (12), and fancy dress (junior category 37, senior category 5) - showcased their presentations.
Speaking at the event, Director of Tourism, Suneel Anchipaka, said, “The Shigmo festival in Goa attracts a large number of tourists, both national and international. It’s crucial to preserve this cultural heritage for future generations. Our ancestors passed down this cultural legacy to us, and it’s our responsibility to conserve it for our children. The primary goal of the Tourism Department in organising the Shigmotsav festival is to promote hinterland tourism. The festival is being held at 18 different locations in Goa to highlight Goan civilisation and its deep historical roots, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Goan villages to the world. Additionally, visitors to the Goa International Travel Mart will have the chance to experience Goa’s rich cultural heritage firsthand.”
President of Porvorim Shigmotav Committee, Anuj Harmalkar, also expressed gratitude to the participants in the Shigmo parade for making the event memorable.
