Shops down shutters to Cuncolim civic body’s 7-day lockdown call

MARGAO
The Cuncolim Municipal Council has ordered a shutdown of shops and business establishments in the Municipal area for a period of seven days, from May 4-10.

In a public notice issued by CMC Vice-Chairperson Anthony Vaz, establishments such as hotels, bars, tea and coffee shops, eateries, gaddas, garments, salons and spas, besides electric and electronic shops have been requested to remain closed from May 4-10.

Essential commodities such as pharmacies, petrol pumps, gas agencies and groceries, however, have been exempted from the shut down.

In fact, all grocery shops in the municipal area will remain open only between 7 am to 11 am during the seven days. Hotels and restaurants have been told to opt for take away instead of in-house

dining.

The CMC vice-chairperson has requested the people to cooperate with the decision of the civic body and also comply with the instructions/SOP issued by the government.

The decision comes in the wake of a surge in Covid cases in the Cuncolim Municipal area in the last few days, with fears being raised that the situation might further aggravate due to public gathering and active interactions. “The CMC has taken the decision in order to stop the spread of the pandemic in the Municipal area,” he added.

The Cuncolim Municipal area, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Balli Primary Health Centres has witnessed a spike in Covid cases in the last few days, with a couple of deaths reported from the town.
