MARGAO
The Goa State Pollution Control Board has directed the Cuncolim Municipal Council Chief Officer to initiate necessary action to clear deficiencies observed at the garbage disposal site of the latter with a direction to submit a compliance report within 15 days.
The GSPCB has further directed the CMC to submit an action plan within a month for the disposal of the old existing waste dumps present within the premises with a further direction to ensure that no burning of waste is carried out.
GSPCB officials, who had carried out inspection of the site at the request of Cuncolim MLA Clafacio Dias on November 27 last, had issued a host of recommendations to the Cuncolim civic body.
Observing that the landfill facility at the site was not in operation and that the seepage-proof lining of the landfill had given way at many places, the GSPCB has further directed the CMC to ensure that landfill is maintained properly and the inert waste is disposed into the same. CMC was also directed to also put in place the leachate collection and treatment facility.
The body was further directed to maintain a regular register to record the waste disposed of in composting pits and also ensure that no non bio-degradable waste is disposed of in the pits.
Composting pit provided for the disposal of chicken waste and waste generated from the beef/pork stalls shall be maintained in a scientific manner and ensure no foul smell is emanated.
While asserting that the civic body should ensure that collected waste is scientifically processed/disposed on regular basis and should clear the existing waste within a month, the GSPCB has recommended to the civic body to segregate the waste collected, i.e dry waste and wet waste as per the solid waste management rules 2016 and separate bins for dry and wet waste are provided on collecting
vehicles.
