There’s good news in store for patients hailing from South Goa, including cancer patients in their advanced stage. They need no longer travel to the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim for pain and palliative care. For a Pain and Palliative Care OPD has become a reality at the Hospicio hospital for the benefit of cancer patients from South Goa.

The Pain and Palliative Care OPD was launched at Hospicio on Thursday by Head of Oncology Department, GMC, Dr Anupama Borkar in the presence of Deputy Director and Hospicio Medical Superintendent, Dr Ira Almeida and Hospicio doctors.

Dr Ira told The Goan that the Pain and Palliative Care OPD will be open on Tuesdays every week, between 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm, wherein cancer patients in their advanced stage can visit and avail services instead of heading to the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim. “The Pain and Palliative Care OPD will be open every week on Tuesdays. The unit has been opened at the Hospicio in the interest of patients from pain and pain in their advanced stage. We have found that cancer patients normally go to Dr Anupama at the GMC, but his facility at Hospicio will help her to refer the patients right here at Margao,” Dr Ira added.

Dr Anupama Borkar pointed out that lots of cancer and other patients in their advanced stage come to the GMC. “Many of these patients only require symptomatic care, to take care of their pain and other problems. In such a situation, these patients need not travel to the GMC. After this centre takes shape, patients can avail the facility and get palliative care,” she said, adding that the palliative care unit at Hospicio will help patients to cut down travel time and get good quality care.
