MAPUSA
The Sirsaim-Tivim Tourist Taxi Association (STTA) has demanded that tourist taxis be allowed to convert into Black and Yellow taxis and operate at the Tivim Railway Station.
Addressing a news conference at Mapusa on Saturday, STTA President Shankar Kandolkar said there are 23 tourist taxis but these operators are not allowed to enter the Tivim Railway Station.
"As a result, we are forced to park our taxis 300 metres away from the station. There is a prepaid counter for Black and Yellow Taxis. Most tourists go by these taxis and we do not get any customers," said Kandolkar.
"We have submitted a memorandum to the transport department, North Goa collector, Mamlatdar and Police. Transport Minister Sudin Dhavlikar had assured in the last assembly session to take a decision within two months, but there has been no solution till now," he added.
STTA Vice-President Baban Tulaskar said the transport department has not issued any new licence for Black and Yellow taxis in the last 10 years.
"The has been sizeable increase in rail passengers and number of taxis have fallen short. The transport department should allow us to operate with a Black and Yellow taxi licence so that we can serve the passengers alighting at Tivim Railway Station," said Tulaskar.
North Goa Congress President Vijay Bhike, who also addressed the news conference said the Congress supported the demands of STTA. "If the government does not meet their demand within 15 days, we will start an agitation," Bhike warned.
