MARGAO
A group of farmers from Sirvodem have claimed that certain persons are out to encroach upon their land for a recreation project.
The farmers claimed that they had been running from pillar to post, seeking the intervention of the authorities, but in vain. Antonio Pereira said the farmers had informed Margao MLA Digambar Kamat of attempts to encroach on their fields to build a joggers track. “We told the MLA that the fields have been encroached on by some locals. We have been threatened since then and even the authorities are not taking cognisance of our complaints,” he said.
Antonio claimed that the husband of the ward councillor came to attack him. “We have been trying to stop the landfilling and encroachment of the fields. No authority seemed willing to help the farmers. It is apparent that the authorities are under pressure not to give us justice,” he said.
Antonio’s wife said she will hold Digambar Sawal, the husband of councillor Deepali Sawal, responsible if her husband is attacked.
