The Director General of Police Dr Muktesh Chander on Thursday said smartphones should be handled smartly to avoid risk of privacy invasion.

“Smartphone is the biggest danger. It is better to be dumb than to be smart when you can’t handle a smart. This is like a beautiful wife whom you can’t handle”, DGP Chander said.

The Goa police chief who is an expert in cyber laws and holds Masters Degree in Criminology and Forensic Science besides being a PhD scholar in Information Security Management from IIT, Delhi gave a talk on cybersecurity at Goa Chamber of Commerce on Thursday.

He further said that these smartphone applications are continuously spying on us.  “You are being watched, everything you say is being heard, everything you type is being stored somewhere”,

he said.

He also said that the only way to prevent spying is to keep away from google and facebook.  “I am making a serious statement. Facebook knows more about you than your spouse”, the DGP said.

“Almost all smartphone data is at risk. You can’t escape it,” he added.

Talking about safety measures while using internet applications, he said, people of India should take cyber security seriously. He gave some suggestions like not to share the password, don’t open email attachment from unknown sender, don’t give your email to unknown person.

He also advised having a separate, exclusive email address for commercial transactions which should not be shared with anyone. He also pointed out about the use of bad password further stating that government servants should not use gmail in the office.

He advised not to mix official email id with commercial email id. He also advised not to visit porn sites and sites which provide pirated music.

“We should not use some untrusted browsers. Some Chinese applications are involved in spying,” the

DGP said.

While advising company officials about data security he said that every company should have data security

policy.

While commenting on India’s cyber security DGP said: “We are an IT power but we are not a Cyber power. We don’t have cyber weapons to counter any cyber attack. Surgical strike in Cyber space, have we ever though about it. China has a special operationg system of their own so it is almost impossible to hack their systems. Nobody outside China has a copy of it. Unfortunately India is still preparing its Bharat Operating System (BOS) for last many years. We are using technology which is developed in another country.”
