Sudhir Sawant (41) from Muddi-Divar was bitten by a snake while he was crossing the flooded road on Thursday evening.
On learning of the incident, Sao Mathias Sarpanch Sadanand Phadte accompanied by other locals from Muddi shifted Sawant to GMC, where he is admitted and currently kept under 24-hour observation. “Currently, the doctors have not been able to ascertain what kind of snake bit Sawant and he is kept under 24-hour observation,” Phadte informed The Goan.
This incident has brought into sharp focus the demand of the locals to post a 24-hour team of doctors at Divar to deal with emergencies like this that may arise due to the flooding incidents.
A local, Chillaya Sawant, stated that the government should act before any untoward incident occurs. “We do not want the government to react to any untoward incident but to be prepared for any eventuality,” Sawant said while demanding for a 24-hour doctors’ team to be stationed in Divar so that medical emergencies could be addressed in the village itself.
Sawant also demanded that a rescue team with boats be stationed at Divar to help marooned villagers, particularly students and senior citizens, cross the flooded roads.
Meanwhile, concerned with the flood situation worsening in Divar, a delegation of the St Aloysious High School PTA met Sao Mathias Sarpanch Sadanand Phadte on Thursday morning and submitted a memorandum demanding that the village be provided with a 24-hour doctors’ team.
Led by Nanda Kerkar, the delegation opined that due to flooding, areas of Muddi and Vanjua have been cut off from the village and there is high possibility of villagers falling sick, particularly children.
“Currently, there is no availability of 24-hours doctor service in Divar and we have petitioned the sarpanch to write to the government to depute a team of doctors here who should be stationed for 24 hours, to deal with any eventuality,” Kerkar informed.
