A youth from Derode-Sattari died while his friend had a lucky escape after their two-wheeler skidded and fell into the Satre River late Wednesday evening, while heavy rains, rising river levels and landslides continued to damage property and disrupt traffic in and around Sattari taluka.
According to Valpoi police, Subhash Chorlekar (25) of Derode, about 14 kms from Valpoi, was reported missing since Wednesday evening. Relatives informed police that Chorlekar was proceeding to Kodal via Derode on his two-wheeler along with a friend.
Due to sudden rise in water level in Satre river, the rider lost control of the two-wheeler on a flooded road and both fell into the river. While his friend manages to swim to safety, Chorlekar got dragged into the river and drowned.
Locals conducted a search operation and managed to recover the body from the river almost 1 km away from the site of the incident. The locals then notified the Valpoi police of the incident.
Meanwhile, landslides at the Chorla Ghat over the last 24 hours continued to disrupt traffic along the Panaji-Belagavi route. On Thursday morning, authorities had cleared mud from landslides the previous day and traffic was allowed to ply along the route. However, a landslide at the Chorla Ghat at 1 pm blocked traffic yet again.
Traffic movement was restored later in the evening, but there have been fears of further landslides due to heavy rains in the area.
Elsewhere, the house of Shripad Sawant was damaged at Pal-Sattari after a coconut tree got uprooted and fell on the structure. The Valpoi fire services went to the site and cleared the fallen tree.
The fire services also cleared some electricity poles which had fallen between Thane and Charavane Road.
