Solution eludes issue of fish vehicles parked along wholesale market road

Making matters worse is that the vehicles entering the wholesale fish market are parked haphazardly right on the roadside, causing traffic congestion in the morning hours.

Seraulim villagers along with MLA Venzy Viegas had descended on the wholesale fish market road during the weekend to protest over the traffic congestion on the main road, causing hardships to school children and office goers.

They demanded that the police and Margao municipal authorities crack a whip against illegal hawkers and vehicular parking along the roadsides.

When The Goan contacted SGPDA Chairman MLA Krishna Salkar to shed light on the traffic congestion on the wholesale fish market road, especially at the entrance to the market, he said a joint inspection of the road will be carried out with the MLAs of Margao and Fatorda Digambar Kamat and Vijai Sardesai respectively along with other authorities for a solution to the issue.

“The SGPDA is keen on evolving a solution to the traffic congestion on the main road at the entrance to the wholesale fish market. We will soon hold an inspection of the road as well as the market to work out a solution," he said.

Fish transporting trucks have been parking their vehicles alongside the wholesale fish market ever since the SGPDA barred parking inside the market after morning business hours. Given that most of the fish traders have no parking provision near their offices and residences, the vehicles are parked on both sides of the road.

The opening of the western bypass road to the wholesale fish market at the Seraulim junction has now aggravated traffic woes on the road, especially in the mornings. Though demands were made to the authorities to declare the road as no parking after the morning business hours, vehicular parking continues along the roadsides to date, a source said.
