Thanks to the High Court intervention, a semblance of order seemed falling in place at the stinking wholesale fish market on the hygiene and cleanliness front, with the SGPDA and the Margao Municipal putting a mechanism in place to take care of waste.
What about the SGPDA mega retail market? Is the SGPDA and the MMC working in tandem to clear the waste dumped along the market periphery, and stop the waste spilling over into the adjoining fields?
Well, unlike the wholesale fish market, the PDA retail market is still craving for attention from the SGPDA and MMC to cap the waste and litter.
A visit to the PDA retail market showed that a solution seemed to have eluded the PDA and MMC in handling the waste generated in the market. If bundles of thermocol waste was found dumped at the market corner, waste stacked in plastic bags have been indiscriminately thrown on the market periphery, with the waste spilling over into the adjoining fields.
That’s not all. Left over shell fish waste was found dumped in the open in the market area, emanating foul odour in the area.
Saying that unknown persons have been dumping the waste in the open, fish vendors pointed out that the smell in the market is unbearable and needs to be tackled on priority.
“Customers may stop visiting the PDA retail market housing the fish, vegetable and fruit market, besides the meat stalls if cleanliness and hygiene is not maintained”, remarked a fish vendor.
While the SGPDA and the MMC had conducted joint inspection of the mega retail market when the PDA markets, both wholesale fish and retails fish markets had come under the High Court scanner, the ground reality in the retail market seemed to have not improved for the better compared to the wholesale fish market.
