MARGAO
A group of daily wage workers employed at the Sonsodo waste management shed on handling daily waste came rushing to the Margao Municipal Council on Thursday to question and protest over the delay in receiving their wages for the month of October.
The Margao civic body was exposed hollow in disbursing the wages of these workers after realisation dawned that no civic official had prepared the effectivity of the workers to confirm they had worked at the site for the month.
Reason: The supervisor handling the work at the Sonsodo site had retired over a month ago and the civic body had drafted no other officials to handle the work of preparing the effectivity of the daily wage workers.
In the absence of the effectivity submitted by the Municipal officials, the wage bill could not be prepared and disbursed to these workers.
The workers first made their presence felt at the Sanitary section, but were informed that the job of preparing the effectivity of their work is being handled by the technical section.
Margao Municipal Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar later told the media that the wages of these workers could not be paid along with other daily wage workers for the simple reason that their effectivity was not submitted to the civic body.
Taking cognisance of the plight of these daily wage workers, the Chief Officer promised to release the wages of these workers without delay, saying the workers would either get their wages by evening or on Friday.
