Sonsodo imbroglio: All eyes on HC hearing tomorrow

MARGAO

All eyes are focused on the Margao Municipal Council ahead of the December 20 hearing of the Sonsodo matter in the High Court as the civic body has decided to scout for all the acquired properties in the commercial capital and explore the possibility of utilising the spaces for the temporary storage of the Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) generated through the remediation

process.

Even as a representative of the farmers opposing the storage of the RDF in the fields opposite the Margao railway station has filed an intervention application before the High Court on Wednesday, the Margao Municipal Council is believed to have not given up the field opposite the railway station for the proposed storage of the RDF as the High Court has not granted any stay in the matter.

Given the intervening public holiday on Thursday, Margao Municipal Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar was holed up in the office after office hours on Wednesday, compiling a report on the status of the sites identified by the civic body, which can be utilised for the temporary storage of the remediated waste, including Refused Derived Fuel (RDF).

Panchwadkar said the Margao  civic body has decided to bring to the notice of the High Court all the properties acquired by the MMC or other agencies such as GSUDA in the city which can be utilised for the storage of the RDF.

The report will be submitted to the High Court on December 20 when the PIL filed by the Citizens for Sonsodo and Goa Foundation comes up for hearing.

The report prepared by the Chief Officer further assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the fact that the Goa Waste Management Corporation is gearing to go full steam with the remediation work at Sonsodo after the second machine is installed at the site.

Sources informed that the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) is believed to have favoured the 4,000 square metres of land identified by Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai adjoining Sonsodo for the temporary storage of the RDF till the civic body gets the all clear signal from other agencies such as GSUDA to utilise its land for the purpose.
