The western bypass road stretch between Benaulim and Navelim have literally become a waste dump yard, with unscrupulous elements disposing of mixed waste along the stretch.
Social activist from Navelim Pratima Coutinho and her counterpart from Benaulim Santan Pereira on Tuesday highlighted the problem of waste dumping along the stretch with no authorities intervening to put a stop to the menace.
The duo pointed out the mixed waste including liquor bottles, diapers, pampers, besides plastic waste has been found at the dump, warning that the dump has been only increasing by the day for want of action by the authorities.
Pratima has urged the BJP Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuemkar to intervene in the matter and clear the eyesore from the stretch.
“Unless the government and the authorities intervene, the entire stretch of Navelim will be converted into a waste dumping ground”, she said.
She added: “Health conscious citizens go for morning and evening walks on the western bypass stretch from Navelim. Certainly, a waste dump along the roadside does not augur well. It only goes to show that the absence of a system to collect the waste”.
Santan Pereira has urged the Goa police to intensify patrolling along the western bypass.
“I had in the recent past nabbed around 15 persons dumping waste along the bypass stress. If I as an individual could nab the unscrupulous persons, why not the Goa police equipped with the logistics and equipment”, he wondered.
