SONSODO: NEW SLEW OF MEASURES, NEW HOPE

SONSODO: NEW SLEW OF MEASURES, NEW HOPE

MARGAO
What’s the roadmap for Sonsodo in a bid to bring about a turnaround at the decades-old eyesore in the commercial capital? Will the roadmap help in finally capping the issue when it could not be resolved over the last two decades since the time the Margao

Municipal Council had roped in a Pune-based

company in the late 90s? The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has proposed both short-term and long-term solutions to address the imbroglio. While the setting up of the two 25TPD bio-digesters is part of the long-term solution, the Corporation has suggested a slew of measures to the Margao Municipal Council to tide over issues in the short term, including handling of wet waste at the existing plant till the two bio-digesters are set up in 18 months. The Goan takes a glance at the measures:

Wet waste management till setting up of bio-digester

1.MMC to maintain machinery such as overhead DEMAG crane, fix grabber crane and screening trommels through its Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and carry out periodic maintenance

2. MMC should treat the daily wet waste inside the Sonsodo shed through windrow composting on regular basis

3. Repair the roof and sidewalls of the existing wet waste shed

4. Immediately clear the waste dumped inside the wet waste processing shed

Dry waste management
1. MMC should put all the eight 8 baling machines in operation on daily basis
2. Put the baling machines installed near SGPDA market in operation. The newly constructed shed at Sonsodo should be repaired and the electricity connection shall be restored at the earliest
3. Install baling machines at the IDC shed for handling dry waste. Handle dry waste in closed shed
4. No dumping of fresh waste should take place near the landfill and besides the shed.
5. Safe buffer zone should be maintained near the high tension electric wire and bushes near the high tension line should be cleared on a regular basis
