Following Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s assurance on the floor of the  House to order a probe into the Sonsodo imbroglio, the government has  initiated the inquiry into funds spent on various companies that had set  up shop at Sonsodo in a bid to resolve the mess.

Sources said  the inquiry office designated by the government had descended at the  Margao Municipal Council a day ago to seek possession of all documents  and files pertaining to the waste treatment plants set up at Sonsodo  since the late 90’s.

MMC Sanitary Inspector, Viraj Arabekar, who was  on 45-day earned leave, also made his presence felt in the Sanitary  section on Wednesday, to hand over the files to the inquiry officer.

Sources  in the know informed that the files and documents, beginning with the  waste treatment plant set up by Komex India, Hyquip Projects, Goa  Foundation, and Fomento were reportedly handed over to the inquiry  officer by the Margao Municipal Council.

Sources in the know informed  that though the inquiry officer is expected to probe into the payments  made by the government to the companies who had set up the plants at  Sonsodo, the government is believed to have had paid money only to Hyquip  Projects to set up the plant, which had never materialised.

While the  inquiry officer has taken in his possession documents from the MMC on  these waste treatment plants, sources said the audit report, which had  reported discrepancies in respect of the Hyquip Projects is expected to  come in handy for the officer to further probe into losses, if any,  caused to the government by the plant.
