Soon, Ravindra Bhavan Margao to be disabled-friendly

MARGAO

There’s good news in store for persons with disability as the Ravindra Bhavan Margao will be disabled-friendly in the coming days.

After Ravindra Bhavan Member Secretary Agnelo Fernandes pursued suggestions received from the Disabilities Rights Association of Goa (DRAG), a registered charitable society recognized by the Directorate of Social Welfare, the Executive Engineer, PWD, Euclides de Souza has accorded technical sanction to works pertaining to providing ramps and handrail accessibility for the persons with disability at an estimated cost of Rs 7.56 lakh.

Work on the suggestions is expected to commence after Ravindra Bhavan obtains the administrative approval.

DRAG had put forth a host of suggestions to make the premises more accessible for persons with disability to provide them with an equal opportunity at the institution with minor alternations and additions to the existing facility.

Works which have been suggested at the Ravindra Bhavan Margao include a ramp on the existing steps proceeding towards the VIP room; handlebars at LHS for the existing ramp at the ground floor area; ramp along with handlebar in the auditorium; ramp along with handlebar on the steps heading towards toilet at ground floor; handlebar at LHS along the existing pathway heading to the parking lane to VIP entrance area (main entrance) and a small approach ramp along with handlebar into the existing pathway heading from the parking lane to the VIP area (main entrance).

Member Secretary Agnelo told The Goan that these works, though minor, will go a long way in making the cultural centre more accessible for persons with disability.

“No doubt, Ravindra Bhavan had ramps both at the entrance and the rear side and toward the auditorium, but these new works will make a difference to persons with disability visiting the institution,” Agnelo added.

Central AC plant work at Ravindra Bhavan Margao yet to commence

MARGAO:

Strange it may seem, but true that work on the installation and commissioning of the screw chiller for the central air conditioning plant at the Ravindra Bhavan Margao is yet to commence though the contractor has just eight days left to complete the task.

The PWD issued the work order to the contractor on July 15 for the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the screw chiller for the central AC plant at the Ravindra Bhavan with September 22 as the stipulated day of completion.

Work on the project, which had last month prompted the management of Ravindra Bhavan to suspend staging of tiatr over the air conditioning facility, however, is yet to commence on the project, estimated to cost around Rs 20 lakh.

On September 6, PWD Assistant Engineer Manuel Fernandes dashed off a letter to the contactor Ms Escube Airconditioning pvt ltd stating that the management is interested in the completion of the work at the earliest as the auditorium is used by the general public for functions.

With the work not yet started to date, Member Secretary Ravindra Bhavan Agnelo Fernandes on Tuesday sent a letter to the PWD Executive Engineers to take up the work on top priority in the public interest as all the programmes in the auditorium are held up.

“I have written the letter to the PWD to take up work since only eight days are left for the contractor to complete the work as per the work order,” Agnelo added.
