Rationalisation of polling stations as per the directions of the Election Commission of India has increased their number in South Goa district to 907, an increase of 43 booths.
Chief Electoral Officer, Kunal, IAS, District Electoral Officer, Ruchika Katyal, IAS, Additional District Election Officer, Sanjit Rodrigues, IAS, had a meeting with representatives of political parties in the South Goa District Collectorate on Friday to discuss the issue of rationalization of polling stations and other poll-related issues ahead of the 2022 Assembly election.
Poll officials informed that the ECI has capped the ceiling of voters to 1000 per polling station, resulting in the creation of additional 43 polling booths spread across the district. The South Goa district, which plays host to 21 Assembly constituencies, had around 854 polling stations at the 2017 Assembly polls.
“The rationalization was resorted to after the ECI restricted the number of voters in a particular polling station to 1000,” informed a senior district official.
A glance at the 21 polling stations after rationalisation shows that Vasco constituency tops the list with the highest number of new polling stations, around eight to be precise, taking the total number of these to 46 in the constituency.
Curtorim constituency in Salcete follows suit with the creation of five new polling stations, taking the number of stations to 43 after rationalisation. Dabolim and Sanvordem have four new polling stations.
There’s no addition to the exiting number of polling stations in the constituencies of Priol, Shiroda, Curchorem and Sanguem. The constituencies of Mormugao, Nuvem, Fatorda, Benaulim, Velim and Quepem will have one additional polling station in the 2022 Assembly election.
Ponda, Madkai, Cortalim, Margao and Canacona will have two additional polling stations.
