Seek urgent judge appointments to clear case backlog in Margao courts
MARGAO
The South Goa Advocates Association (SGAA) has decided to approach the Bombay High Court at Goa over the delay in clearing cases due to vacant courts.
The SGAA will seek directions for the immediate appointment of judges in the South Goa trial courts, which are facing a severe shortage of judicial officers.
The decision was taken at an extraordinary meeting chaired by association president Adv. Prasad Naik. Lawyers agreed to approach the High Court with their long-pending demand to fill vacant judicial posts.
Adv. Naik said that currently, six courtrooms in the Margao court complex have no presiding officers, and this situation has continued for a long time.
“These vacancies have seriously affected the delivery of justice in South Goa. Cases are piling up, hearings and judgments are delayed, and both litigants and lawyers are frustrated,” he added.
Earlier, the association had submitted a detailed request to the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, highlighting the problems faced due to non-functioning courts in one of South Goa’s busiest court complexes. Despite this, no appointments have been made so far.
The association stated that justice delayed is justice denied, and inaction is harming the legal system and public trust in the judiciary. The shortage of judges is also burdening the remaining judges, further slowing the justice process.
Having exhausted all other means, the SGAA will now file a writ petition in the High Court seeking directions to the State Government and the High Court administration to urgently fill the vacant posts and restore full functioning of the Margao trial courts.
