With the South Goa district police headquarters having outlived its utility and unable to fully meet the requirements of the men in uniform, PWD Minister Digambar Kamat said on Thursday that the entire police headquarters building will be redeveloped to meet future requirements.
Kamat said he has asked the PWD Chief Architect to prepare a comprehensive plan for the police headquarters on priority to set in motion the process of constructing a new building.
“I have asked the Chief Architect to also factor in the police quarters located within the district headquarters. The police residential quarters will be reconstructed as part of the redevelopment of the police headquarters,” he said, adding that the plan will be finalised in consultation with the police top brass after taking into account all their requirements.
To a question, the PWD Minister said the department had recently conducted a structural stability test of the building housing the district police headquarters and that action would be initiated based on its findings. “The PWD had conducted stability tests on all bridges and major culverts across the State. Based on the findings, necessary repair work is being initiated,” he added.
The decades-old ground-plus-two-storey South Goa district police headquarters currently houses the Margao Police Station, Margao Traffic Cell, CID department, offices of the District Police Chief and SDPO Margao, besides barracks on the top floor.
Earlier, the headquarters also housed the Maina-Curtorim Police Station, which has since been shifted to Manora-Raia.
