South Goa votes amidst peace

: South Goa District Collector, Swapnil Naik said that elections to the eight constituencies of Salcete have been by and large peaceful, barring minor incidents of allegations and counter allegations.

At Khareband, the election agent of Aam Admi Party candidate, Sanjeev Raiturkar claimed that sarees and money were being openly distributed at the Khareband area of Margao constituency. The Collector said that the allegation is being investigated by the flying squad and election authorities.

Supporters of Congress Curtorim candidate Reginaldo Lourneco and his BJP rival Arthur D’Silva had a face off in the constituency. Reginaldo later lodged a complaint with the Margao Police stating that his supporter Siddesh Bhagat was threatened by the rival group.

Minor tension was felt in Rumdamol Housing Board area and outside the Ghantamorod area. However, police acted swiftly and dispersed the persons assembled close to the polling booths.

Naik said no major incidents of violence was reported anywhere. "I personally moved out for patrolling, but polling was peaceful everywhere. There was a group clash at the Pajifond locality of Fatorda constituency last night, but the situation was well under control,” he said.

Sources said that an incident of assault was reported again at Pajifond locality early morning, prompting the police to beef up security around the two polling booths there.
