Executive Director of the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG), Ajay Gaude, submitted his reply on Tuesday to a show-cause notice issued by Chief Secretary V Candavelou over a grand welcome held when he took charge a day earlier.

The notice, issued for alleged “unprofessional behaviour”, gave Gaude three days to explain. It was based on videos showing staff and coaches greeting him with flowers and drums at the Panaji office on Monday. The celebration drew some criticism, prompting the Chief Secretary to seek clarification.

According to SAG officials, Gaude was not directly responsible for the arrangements, as staff had organised the surprise welcome. “We had gathered at 9 am for his arrival, but when he was delayed, staff called him to confirm if he would take charge that day. He said he might be late due to other commitments,” a source told The Goan, adding that Gaude had not expected any such reception.

In the video, Gaude appeared surprised and even declined a garland, greeting the staff only with folded hands. Footage also showed him asking why such a welcome was necessary.

It was also learnt that journalists were not allowed inside his chamber during the handover, as colleagues said Gaude preferred to start work immediately. Two months ago, when he assumed charge as Director of Sports, there had been no ceremony.
