In a first, the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) has this year decided to hold spot admissions to the engineering programmes after the second round of engineering, instead of waiting till all rounds are complete.

Those who have answered the Goa Common Entrance Test (GCET), but, who did not apply to engineering degree programmes in the state, can head to the DTE in Porvorim on the morning of July 18 where they will be given spot admission, if found eligible, deputy director of the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) Centralised Admission Division (CAD) Pradeep Kusnur told ‘The Goan’ on Tuesday.

The spot admission round for diploma in engineering will be held on July 25.

For the spot admissions, students from Goa will be given first preference, followed by Goan students who have not been residing in Goa.

Lastly, students from outside Goa will be given an opportunity, he said.

“We decided to hold the spot round earlier this year to prevent students from taking admission to degree programmes outside the state,” Kusnur said.

He added, “There is no reason to make them wait till August. Besides, we’ve now got six additional seats in each branch, in all of the five engineering colleges because of the Economically Weaker Section (EWS)  category.”

As of now, a total of 290 engineering degree seats are vacant, but it is yet to be seen how many seats will be vacant after Round 2.

The state has a total of around 1,500 engineering seats this year across all branches.

For 2nd year in a row, computer engg most sought after branch

PANAJI: For the second year in a row, computer engineering was the most sought after engineering branch, followed closely by mechanical engineering. Electronics and telecommunications engineering (ETC) which had till 2017 been the most sought after has, since last year, dropped to the third most opted for branch by those pursuing engineering,

This year for the first time since it was started, the mining engineering degree which used to be offered by Goa Engineering College (GEC) did not admit any students after the government announced that the course would be suspended following poor response.

The first round of admission to engineering and pharmacy degree courses in the state were held from June 17 to June 21 at the DTE, Porvorim. 140 seats were left vacant after the first round. However, a circular from the government on June 21, announced an additional 10% seats for general category students who come under the EWS quota.

Due to this, another 150 seats were added making a total of 290 seats still vacant. A second round of admissions to these courses will be held between July 15 and 17.

Meanwhile, direct admissions to engineering in the second year began on Monday, and the first round of admission to MBBS was held on July 4 and 5. There were no vacant seats.
