SPOTLIGHT | ASSEMBLY VOICES: WHAT THEY SAID

VIBHA VERMA | 13 hours ago

Minister Mauvin Godinho:

This session saw important issues being raised, and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant also spoke about the legalisation of houses, whether on private, comunidade, or alvara land. This empowers the common man and the poor. The government does not want to demolish homes and render people homeless. Giving them ownership of their houses will uplift their lives...

BJP MLA Michael Lobo:

I must speak about waste management, a portfolio I previously held. Unfortunately, there has been no progress. The current minister is my friend, but there is no visible performance on the work front. The Saligao plant emits such a stench that it reaches Candolim and Nerul. Public trust will erode, and people will oppose any plan for a third plant if things continue like this.

BJP MLA Nilesh Cabral:

This Assembly session has been a pro-people session, during which important bills were passed, including the one for regularising houses. The Opposition, instead of competing among themselves over the amount of speaking time, should focus on bringing important and relevant points to the floor of the House. Speaking without substance does not serve the public interest.

Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao:

Despite the ruling party's numerical superiority, being six times stronger than the Opposition, they resorted to using tactics like labelling issues "sub judice" and converting starred LAQs to unstarred ones to avoid giving replies and debating pressing issues. The government failed on all fronts... The only area where they excelled was in passing bills without discussion or scrutiny.

---

Congress MLA Altone D’Costa:

The Opposition worked together in a constructive manner during the session. There is no democracy without constructive opposition. We have done our best. I am not happy with most of the assurances given, but it remains to be seen how many will be acted upon. The government must fulfil the assurances it had made on various issues. The amendment on regularisation of land will be misused.

---

GFP MLA Vijai Sardesai:

Although the Opposition is outnumbered, we have exposed the government on all counts. There are serious matters that demand urgent attention. I will continue to hold the government accountable through mechanisms such as the Assurances Committee, ensuring that the promises made are honoured and that the concerns of the common man are addressed.
