St Mary’s High School, Mapusa bagged the first place at the 9th annual Goa History Quiz organised by Xavier Centre for Historical Research (XCHR), at Porvorim.
According to a press note, as many as 336 students from 65 schools in Goa participated in the preliminary round of the contest, aimed at getting school children to delve into the history of Goa in a fun-filled and relaxed way, in the company of fellow-students.
In the final, Bhoomi Gaonkar, Dia Ann Saji and Anavee Palyekar of St Mary’s High School, Mapusa bagged the first place, followed by Heramb Tople, Ved Rankale and Sushubh Pereira of GS Amonkar High School in second place. Vaishnavi Dhume, Smital Gaonkar and Om Bandekar from St John of the Cross High School, Sanquelim, secured the third place.
Quizmasters from the Sunday Evening Quiz Club collaborated with XCHR and made the quiz event truly memorable and enjoyable for the young students.
The chief guest at the event was Bagirath Shetye, secretary of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Porvorim, and he gave away prizes at the
occasion.
“XCHR goes out of its way to invite rural schools and provide their students with opportunities for competition and learning. Registration fees are waived off and participation is free for all schools,” said Fr Anderson Fernandes, administrator at the XCHR. Although XCHR is a centre for post-graduate research in history, the outreach to the schools of Goa, especially in the rural areas, is an essential part of its
vision. XCHR believes firmly that the young could be made enthusiastic about the history of Goa and its culture, which tends to get neglected at the school level.”
“Furthermore, sowing the seed of heritage and history in young minds holds the promise of future scholars of history at college and university level. XCHR has now developed an excellent library dedicated to the history of Goa since ancient times. It has become a rich source of information for school, college and university students,” Fr Fernandes added.
