St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, marked the 100th birth anniversary of late Rev Dr Nicolau Pereira with the opening of a week-long programme honouring the scholar and leader who served as Principal from 1965 to 1991. The programme brought together the Management, former and current staff, alumni, heads of neighbouring institutions, PTA members, students and Fr Nicolau’s family.
A Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrao, was held on the theme, “He has made everything beautiful in His time”, reflecting on gratitude for the past and responsibility towards the future. Administrator Antonio Salema highlighted Fr Nicolau’s contribution, while Officiating Principal Ursula Barreto recalled him as a caring disciplinarian, visionary leader and man ahead of his time who promoted excellence without compromising values.
Under ‘Paying Tribute to a Rich Legacy’, Edwina Pereira presented ‘Cura Personalis’, tracing his life, vocation and tenure. She recalled how generations of students fondly called him “Pop”. Former faculty member Arthur Gomes and BMX President Lucindo Faria shared memories of his leadership and dedication. Cardinal Ferrao stressed preserving and transmitting Fr Nicolau’s values of faith, education and service. The centenary edition of the college magazine, The Halcyon, was released and a tribute wall displayed messages from alumni and former staff. Students presented ‘Where Footprints Inspire’ and ‘Sound and Symphony’, followed by staff’s ‘Gonvlli Kitlo Boro’. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and College Anthem.
