ith an area which covers the rapidly growing Porvorim plateau, six large villages and the state assembly complex, Porvorim Police Station has a lot on its hands.
But while its jurisdiction is huge, the Porvorim PS has been hit by a shortage of personnel, making it challenging to maintain law and order in such a large area
of operation.
At present, the Porvorim PS is headed by one police inspector and the staff present consist of 5 police sub inspectors, 13 hawaldars and 100 constables.
According to a source at the Porvorim PS, the police needs an additional three assistant sub inspectors, four hawaldars and 50 constables.
“In all, six large villages, Reis Magos, Pilerne, Nerul, Penha de Franca, Socorro, and Salvador do Mundo come under the jurisdiction of Porvorim PS. Due to this huge jurisdiction and staff shortage, Porvorim police are often unable to reach the site of an accident or crime,” the police source said.
Citing statistics in 2019 to prove to huge workload, the police source said there were 190 accidents reported in the jurisdiction of Porvorim PS, of which seven mishaps were fatal, nine serious mishaps and 174 minor mishaps.
“There were innumerable minor accidents which were settled mutually by the parties involved in
the accidents.”
“Besides, there were 21 murder cases, 5 attempt to murder cases, 6 rape cases and 4 kidnapping cases and all these cases have been detected. There were also 28 dacoity/burglary/theft/chain snatching cases registered, of which 10 cases have been detected,” the source added.
In addition to investigating crimes and offences, the Porvorim PS also has to maintain law and order, perform night patrolling duty and provide security at the Assembly Complex. Soon, the Bombay High Court at Goa will also start functioning at its administrative building opposite the Assembly complex and it too will be under the purview of Porvorim PS.
“Working in the police force is very different from what is depicted in movies. We have a huge workload and the police staff are stressed and face significant external pressures,” admitted a policeman at the Porvorim PI.
“Considering the huge volume of work at the Porvorim PS, the State government must think seriously in this matter and should provide additional staff to the Porvorim PS to maintain law and order in a more effective and efficient manner,” the policeman added.
